Things To Think About

What Is A Spray Adhesive

Spray adhesive, also called spray glue, is any adhesive applied onto a surface from a pressurized container as a mist. The mist creates a uniform and consistent adhesive coat.

What Is The Difference Between Glue And Adhesive

An adhesive is any non-metallic substance that joins things together through surface attachment and resists separation.

Informally, the words glue and adhesive are used interchangeably. More technically, glues are a kind of adhesive derived from natural plant and animal sources.

Who Invented Spray Adhesives

3M invented spray adhesive in 1964 when they put a single-stage adhesive, Super 77 Spray Adhesive, in an aerosol can.

Is Spray Glue Toxic

It depends on the formulation. There are nontoxic formulations, but you will need to read the label to be sure.

You need to take safety measures whenever you use an aerosol. Inhaling the mist can be dangerous even if the formulation is nontoxic.

Make sure you apply spray adhesives in a well-ventilated area. Avoid inhaling the mist. Wearing a mask or respirator is always a good idea.

How To Apply Spray Adhesive

It is easy to use spray adhesives. You just need to follow some simple steps to get the best results.

  • Prepare the work area. Make sure you have enough space to work. The work area needs to be well-ventilated. Overspray is a bit messy, so cover the work area with a protective cloth or paper.
  • Prepare the surfaces. Make sure all of the surfaces you want to glue are clean and dry. Remove any oil, wax, paint, or residue before spraying. Test fit the pieces before spraying and joining. Also, clean away any dust, particles, or fragments that will block the glue.
  • Use personal safety equipment. Wear a mask to avoid inhaling adhesive mist. Also, avoid inhaling the propellant. Latex or nitrile gloves (not PVC, nylon, or cotton) can protect your hands.
  • Prepare the glue. Make sure the adhesive is at the right temperature. Most glues work best between 65°F and 95°F (18°C and 35°F ). Check the nozzle for blockage and remove it. Shake the can vigorously before spraying.
  • Apply the spray glue. Hold the can upright about 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) from the surface. Apply an even coat of adhesive to both surfaces using a steady side-to-side motion.
  • Join the pieces. Wait until the adhesive becomes tacky, usually 2 to 3 minutes. Now, join the pieces and then apply gentle firm pressure for a complete bond. The bond should be secure in just a few minutes. It will strengthen overnight.
  • Cleanup and storage. It is easy to do. When you are done, you will need to clean the nozzle. Just hold the can upside down and give it a quick spray. Remove any buildup with mineral spirits. Make sure the cap is on tightly before storing it in a safe, dry place at room temperature.
